Great seahorses have fled Coromandel because of overfishing
UPSC Mains General Studies Paper 3 - Environmental
The great seahorse may be migrating slowly to Odisha due to heavy fishing off the Coromandel coast. Globally, there are 46 seahorses. One of the Indo-seahorse Pacific's hotspots, India's coastal environments are home to nine of the 12 species. Eight States and five Union Territories, including Lakshadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, have these nine species along their coasts. Seahorses raft with ocean currents to migrate. This requires enhanced coastal ecosystem monitoring.
